Research shows that strong spacial thinking skills predict success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Based upon its finding, researchers at Michigan Tech developed a program that improves students' spacial thinking skills and found that it improves math achievement scores. This program is in use at universities around the country and has shown to improve achievement of students at the university level. Spacial Thinking training is now being expanded to students in K-12, and Northwestern researchers want to study its effectiveness in middle school students. Drs. David Uttal and Kinnari Atit are looking to bring this program to local middle schools. Pilot studies have shown positive results in terms of improving participating middle school students' math achievement scores.
