Publication Year:

Since 28 percent, or 26.000 square miles, of Colorado is underlain by coal and since the state has a history of gassy mines and coal gas shows in oil and gas wells. the U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a two-year grant (1975-1977) for the Colorado Geological Survey to study coalbed methane. This was followed by a series of U.S. Department of Energy grants from 1978 to 1984 and a Colorado Oil and Gas Commission grant (1980-1982).
