This year's winners explored ways to harvest water from non-traditional sources, how to reduce pavement heat while converting it into electrical power, and using storm and wastewater to recharge groundwater. Every year the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosts an innovation contest, as part of its Grand Challenge to optimize infrastructure costs for the U.S. public, and rethinking the way civil engineers approach their work.
