#Soil Profiles: New Jersey Downer

PDF versionPDF version
Soil scientists dig holes to investigate soils in various regions. Looking at the flat face of that hole is called a “soil profile.” Here, you can see the distinct yellow area under the top, browner, layers.
The Soil Science Society of America blog "Soils Matter" profiled the state soil of New Jersey, the Downer Soil. This soil plays a major role in the Garden State, generally supporting woodlands but at least 40% supports high-value vegetable and fruit crops.
