All the soils in Iowa have been surveyed and cataloged as part of the cooperative soil survey. Soil color is one of the items in the soils database people find useful.
In the Soil Science Society of America Blog "Soils Matter" experts explain why soil beds get so compacted, and what can be done to keep them healthy. They even use blocks to breakdown the important parts of soil: water, organic matter, mineral materials, and how they should "stack" to demonstrate a healthy soil. The suggestions go beyond tilling and even make the argument for avoiding tilling altogether!
