Congress passes continuing resolution funding the government through April 2017

December 9, 2016

Both chambers of Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the federal government through April 28, 2017. The CR’s passage prevented a government shutdown, which would have otherwise occurred on December 9, 2016. President Obama signed the CR into law on the morning of December 10, 2016.

Overall, the CR continues to fund federal agencies at their existing fiscal year 2016 levels. However, it does include an additional $170 million in emergency appropriations for communities afflicted by lead contaminated drinking water in Flint, Michigan, and $4.1 billion for emergency response to disasters, including flooding in Louisiana.
