Budget update for September

September 28, 2016

The House and Senate successfully passed a short-term spending bill on September 28 that will fund the federal government through December 9, 2016. The continuing resolution (CR) narrowly avoided another government shutdown, which would have gone into effect if lawmakers hadn’t been able to reach a deal before the end of the 2016 fiscal year (FY) on September 30.

Lawmakers broke for October recess shortly after passing the CR and headed back to their home districts to campaign before the election on November 8. They will only have around 12 legislative days when they return from recess to complete the FY 2017 appropriations process, or pass another short-term spending bill, to avoid another government shutdown.
