Interactive map of earthquakes around the world

The U.S. Geological Survey's Latest Earthquakes viewer shows the locations and magnitudes of recent earthquakes around the world. Users can also search the archives for global earthquakes dating back to the early 20th century. Maps can be generated for specified ranges of time, area, and earthquake magnitude.

Additional layers on the map include plate boundaries, major U.S. faults, and the USGS earthquake hazard forecast map for the United States.

EARTH: Double Trouble - Volcanic Eruption Leads to Strong Earthquake Eight Months Later

A 2002 eruption of Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that killed more than 100 people also triggered an earthquake eight months later that shook the town of Kalehe in the Lake Kivu region. EARTH Magazine explores just what happened to better understand a region that is being pulled apart by plate tectonics.

EARTH: The Most Dangerous Fault in America

When people think of dangerous faults in America, the the San Andreas probably comes to mind first. But another potentially greater threat lurks in the East Bay region of Northern California, just a stone's throw from San Francisco and the tech hub of Silicon Valley: the Hayward Fault. In the June issue, EARTH Magazine guest author Steven Newton lays out just what is at risk, and what to expect when an earthquake strikes on what may be the most dangerous fault in America.

Interactive map of earthquakes in Alabama

The Geological Survey of Alabama provides an online interactive map of earthquake information for Alabama. The map provides the locations, dates, and magnitudes of historical earthquakes, as well as highlighting recent earthquakes.

Known surface faults and interpreted subsurface faults are also shown, allowing users to see the relationships between different identified faults and historical earthquakes.

Interactive map of earthquakes in Montana

The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology provides an online interactive map of earthquake information for Montana, much of Idaho and Wyoming, and nearby areas of Washington, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alberta, and British Columbia.

The map provides the locations, dates, and magnitudes of historical earthquakes. For Montana only, additional map data include recently active faults, seismic hazard zones, and a generalized geologic map.

Visualization of earthquake risk in California

In 2015. the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities - a collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Geological Survey, and the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) - released the Third California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF3). A visualization was produced to accompany this release, showing the progress of fault modelling in California and the updated earthquake likelihood map.
