Aquatic Scientists Bring Hollywood to Science Communication in Honolulu

The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) continues its eight year effort to look to train its scientists to be more effective communicators with the public and with each other. They will continue to host Los Angeles-based actor and Improv coach Brian Palermo their annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii in February to get the Hollywood perspective on storytelling – because that’s really what research is.  

#10: Remote sensing on Mars

Fritz Foss and Nathaniel Putzig - co-authors of January's The Leading Edge cover article - discuss "3D imaging of Mars’ polar ice caps using orbital radar data." Fritz Foss has worked in various capacities in the oil & gas exploration business for the past 23 years. He co-founded Unified GeoSystems in 2009. Nathaniel Putzig is a Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute. He's worked 14 years with terrestrial active-source seismic data in academia and industry. Presently, he serves as the US/Deputy Team Leader for the Shallow Radar sounder on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Meet the Five Teams Hoping to Change the Face of #Mining

The Society for Mining and Metallurgy Exploration, Inc. (SME) announced the five team finalists for their Move Mining Competition out of 40 entries from 24 states and 7 countries. The teams are: Wasatch Wonders with their concept paper, "YoursMinedOurs"; Team Atwood with their concept paper, "Changing the World View of Mining Through Game Based Learning"; Montana Tech Club Met with "Mining Moves"; Queens University Mining Department Group 5 with "Mining Facts" and Miles of Smiles with "The Mineral Maniacs: A children's fantasy book series on mining."
