NDGS Looks at Paleontology Exhibits Across North Dakota, and more!

The North Dakota Geological Survey July 2016 issue of Geo News is now available. This month they explored the many paleontology exhibits that are available across the state of North Dakota which include a spectacular array of dinosaurs including triceratops, mosasaur, and fossils that harken back to present day North Dakota's swampy past.

EARTH: Where Fire Freezes: All Eyes, Ears and Instruments on Iceland's Volatile Volcanoes

Iceland is located in the North Atlantic straddling a mid-ocean ridge and possibly riding over a Hawaiian-style hot spot. This makes it is a prime geological environment for volcanoes: Iceland has more than 100 volcanoes, 33 of which are active. Iceland is also home to examples of every type of volcano on Earth, each with its own eruptive pattern. Thus, the island nation presents a special challenge to volcanologists as well as serving as an ideal natural laboratory for studying how volcanic processes evolve.

EARTH: Karakoram Glaciers Buck Global, Regional Trends

Resting in the Karakoram Range between northern Pakistan and western China, the Karakoram glaciers are stumping scientists. Unlike most mountain glaciers, the Karakoram glaciers, which account for 3 percent of the total ice-covered area in the world, excluding Greenland and Antarctica, are not shrinking. On the contrary, a team of French glaciologists has recently confirmed that these glaciers on average have remained stable or may have even grown slightly in recent years.
