The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is accepting applications for the 2018 Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching. Given annually, this award is presented to one teacher of grades K-8 in the United States or Key Stages 1-3 in the United Kingdom each year. The award recognizes leadership and innovation in Earth science education.

AGI Accepting Applications for 2015 Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching

The winner of the Edward C. Roy Award will receive a cash prize and an additional travel grant to attend the National Science Teachers Association Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in March 2016. To be eligible, applications must be postmarked by January 20, 2016.

John Russell to Receive the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

John Russell, a teacher at Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science, and Engineering in New York, NY, has been named the 2015 recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. Russell, who earned his master’s degree in adolescent education from Pace University, has spent his career challenging students in eighth through twelfth grade by integrating research into authentic experiences for students in Earth sciences.

Given annually, this award is presented to one full-time K-8 teacher in the U.S. or U.K. whose excellence and innovation in the classroom elevates students’ understanding of the Earth and its many processes.
