AGI Announces Winners of "Life in the Field" Video and Photo Contest"

The American Geological Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that the winners of the first "Life in the Field" Video and Photo Contest are Patricia A. Beddows of Northwestern University for her video "Yucatan Peninsula Geology" and Danita Brandt of Michigan State University for the photo "The Complete Field Geologist." Beddows' video captures the spirit of field work and academic benefits of field experience with footage from a university field trip to Mexico, while Brandt's photograph shows a classic example of a student outfitted with field gear.

The Young Earth Scientists for Society (YES) network, an association of earth scientists under the age of 35 years representing geological societies from around the world, in collaboration with the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), is organizing a world congress for young earth scientists, policy makers, advisors and decision makers.

Geoscience Students Missing Job Opportunities

The American Geological Institute (AGI) has conducted a survey of students majoring in the geosciences and faculty to ascertain their attitudes towards employment in the geosciences. With a large percentage of the workforce retiring in coming years, job opportunities for recent graduates are plentiful with more openings than applicants to fill them. But many students are either unaware or uninterested in the fields where these employment opportunities exist.
