Kenneth L. Huff to Receive the Roy Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

Kenneth L. Huff, a sixth grade teacher at Mill Middle School in Williamsville, New York, has been named the 2018 recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. Huff earned his Master's degree in Education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo and is National Board Certified in Early Adolescence/Science. In addition to teaching, Huff was the co-chair of the Teacher Advisory Council for the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

Now Accepting Applications for 2018 Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is accepting applications for the 2018 Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching. Given annually, this award is presented to one teacher of grades K-8 in the United States or Key Stages 1-3 in the United Kingdom each year. The award recognizes leadership and innovation in Earth science education.

AAPG National Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award

The American Association of Petroleum Geologists' (AAPG) Foundation’s National Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award program, initiated in 1996, exists to recognize teachers who go beyond the textbook to incorporate applied geology into their lesson plans and "bring students an appreciation of how one field of science touches their everyday life." In support of this program, AGI provides each teacher an Earth Science Week kit and a copy of an AGI publication.

Nathan Shotwell to Receive the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

Nathan Shotwell, a teacher at Holman Middle School in Glen Allen, Virginia, has been named the 2013 recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. Shotwell, who earned his Master's degree in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, has spent his career challenging middle- and junior-high school students with what he calls "authentic problems" and inquiry-based learning in the Earth sciences.

AGI Accepting Applications for 2013 Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is accepting nominations for the Edward C. Roy Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching. Given annually, this award is presented to one full-time K-8 teacher in the U.S. or U.K. whose excellence and innovation in the classroom elevates students, understanding of the Earth and its many processes.

2012 Recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching Announced

Meg Town, a teacher at Redmond Junior High School in Redmond, Washington, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. Town, who earned her master's degree in education from the University of Washington, has spent her career challenging middle and junior high school students with inquiry-based, hands-on learning in the Earth sciences. Earth science is, she says, "the most touchable science."
