Geologist-in-Training

On the pathway to being a licensed or recognized professional geologist, many states have established an entry-level professional credential modelled after the Engineer-in-Training credential. For the geologic community, this qualification is usually termed as Geologist-in-Training or Intern Geologist. Almost universally, this credential is held by individuals who have met the initial credentials such as the appropriate college degree and passing the requisite examinations. Often full licensure requires a certain amount of supervised practice in the prodession, at which individuals can qualify for full professional licensure or certification.

A key caveat for qualifying for the GIT or Intern Geologist is taking the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology exam. Some states require the exam to be taken only after an indiviual has received their college degree, but some do allow a student take the exam as they are completing their studies.
