Former AGI Education Director Marilyn Suiter Passes Away
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is saddened to share the news that colleague and friend Marilyn J. Suiter passed away recently. Suiter served for 10 years in leadership positions at AGI, including Director of Special Education Programs, Director of Education and Human Resources, and Director of Human Resources and Career Development. During that time, she led AGI’s Minority Participation Program, which promoted ethnic diversity and awarded scholarships to underrepresented students in the geosciences.
Suiter received awards and honors from several organizations, including AGI, the Geological Society of America (GSA), and the Association for Women Geoscientists. She was honored as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association for Women in Science, and GSA. Additionally, Suiter was a member of numerous AGI Member Societies, where she served in multiple leadership roles.
“Marilyn Suiter’s contributions to the geoscience community spanned from her work as a public school science teacher and an oil industry geologist to her service at the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Science Foundation,” said AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur. “Her pioneering work in promoting diversity in the geosciences, which she continued until recently at NSF, produced a lasting legacy at AGI and an enduring impact on the geoscience enterprise. We are deeply indebted to Dr. Suiter for her unwavering dedication to advancing excellence and broad participation in the geosciences.”
