Dr. Haydon Mort Honored for Transforming Public Understanding of Geoscience

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is proud to announce Dr. Haydon Mort, international geoscience communicator and founder and CEO of Geologize Ltd., based in London, England, as the 2025 recipient of the AGI Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Public Understanding of the Geosciences.

Through his groundbreaking work in geoscience communication, Dr. Mort has helped reshape how professionals worldwide connect society with the planet’s most pressing challenges. As the visionary leader behind Geologize, Dr. Mort has empowered more than 55,000 active learners across academia and industry through the company’s acclaimed Practical Geocommunication training program and, more recently, Mining Communication training. Globally, more than 300,000 individuals have access to the course through various license agreements with academic, government, and industry partners.

“Dr. Mort has made an exponential difference to geoscience communication through his relentless pursuit of training,” said AGI President Anna Shaughnessy. “The importance of his work cannot be overstated.”

“Geologize’s mission has always been to give geoscientists the tools to build public trust through clarity, empathy, and relevance,” said Dr. Mort. “This award is not just a personal honor, but a tribute to the thousands of learners and organizations who have shared this vision and carried it into communities, boardrooms, classrooms, and conversations around the world.”

Dr. Mort’s unique perspective on the science of attention and memory has shaped Geologize’s training, helping geoscientists make complex subjects both accessible and memorable for diverse audiences. Founded in 2016, Geologize works with universities, companies, and professional societies worldwide.

Since 2023, AGI has partnered with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists to offer Dr. Mort’s Practical Geocommunication training to all members of AGI Member Societies globally. Over 3,500 learners have already participated through this partnership, gaining practical tools to engage the public, policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders in meaningful conversations about geoscience’s role in society.

The AGI Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Public Understanding of the Geosciences is presented to a person, organization, or institution in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the public understanding of the geosciences. Dr. Mort is being recognized at the Friends of AGI Awards Reception during the GSA Connects conference in San Antonio, Texas, on October 21, 2025.
