Christopher Keane Accepts New Role as AGI Interim Executive Director
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that longtime AGI Director of Geoscience Profession and Higher Education Dr. Christopher Keane is assuming the role of AGI Interim Executive Director.
Dr. Keane has provided leadership in the geoscience profession for nearly 30 years. As Director of Geoscience Profession and Higher Education, he has been leading AGI’s portfolio of efforts in workforce, policy, and technical geoscience activities. Some specific programs include ongoing workforce data as part of the Geoscience Profession Data Dashboard, broadening policy awareness through the Geoscience PolicyApp and the William L. Fisher Congressional Geoscience Fellowship, and helping support the next generation of geoscientists with the Next Horizons First-Generation Student Geoscience Scholarship, the Geoscience Job Center, and online professional development such as the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative. He is currently Vice President of the International Raw Materials Observatory (INTRAW) and a former Treasurer of the Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology and a prior Member at Large with GeoscienceWorld.
Since joining the AGI in 1997, Dr. Keane has served as Director of Communications & Technology and Editor of EARTH Magazine (Geotimes). Before that, he worked at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Industrial Minerals Section. He earned his Ph.D. in Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Science at the University of Maryland.
“Christopher Keane brings an exceptional combination of scientific expertise, strategic vision, and deep institutional knowledge that makes him uniquely qualified to guide AGI during this important transition,” said AGI President Claudia Mora. “For nearly three decades, he has helped strengthen the geoscience profession through innovative programs, trusted leadership, and a steadfast commitment to serving our member societies and the broader geoscience community. Under his interim leadership, AGI will continue advancing its mission while building on the momentum of its many initiatives that support the geoscience enterprise.”
The AGI Board of Directors will launch a search for a permanent Executive Director following the departure of former Executive Director Dr. Jonathan Arthur. AGI wishes to express thanks to Dr. Arthur for his contributions to AGI over the past five years.
