AGI Film Series 'Earth as Inspiration' Highlights Student Research at Intel ISEF

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is proud to announce a brand new film series, Earth as Inspiration. The series — narrated by AGI Earth Science Education Ambassador and former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell — underscores the importance of Earth science learning and understanding for young and old audiences alike.

In her first engagement as Education Ambassador, Jewell attended the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the premier scientific conference for pre-college researchers, on May 17, 2018. The first chapter of the new film series highlights student research displayed at the fair, demonstrating a bright future for the geosciences and emphasizing that geoscience permeates all aspects of our lives.

Intel ISEF is a remarkable example of how the Earth inspires the young generation. This was evident to Jewell from the moment she entered the exhibition hall. “What’s amazing about walking into Intel ISEF is just the depth of science and engagement of these students,” said Jewell. “They are scientists.”

Intel ISEF unites young scientists from more than 75 countries, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctor-level scientists review and judge their work. As part of an ongoing partnership with Intel ISEF, AGI facilitates the review of geoscience-related projects and offers four awards to recognize outstanding geoscience projects.

At the end of the day at Intel ISEF, Jewell congratulated the students on their award-winning projects, emphasizing the importance of fostering curiosity and innovation in the next generation of geoscientists. “It’s all about unlocking the curiosity in the next generation so they can be inspired to think about going into scientific disciplines and actually engage in the process of creating a future that is going to be exciting for them, but also sustainable for our planet,” said Jewell.

The next chapter in the AGI Earth as Inspiration series featuring former Sec. Sally Jewell takes her to Houston to talk with teachers participating in AGI’s K-5 Teacher Leadership Academy at ExxonMobil’s headquarters and to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
