AGI Welcomes 2019 Executive Committee

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) welcomes new members to the AGI Executive Committee and congratulates Dr. Rodney C. Ewing as he takes office as AGI President. The new and departing members of the Executive Committee were recognized at the Friends of AGI Reception on November 5, 2018, in Indianapolis, Ind.

AGI welcomes the following members to their new roles on the Executive Committee:

  • Dr. Carolyn G. Olson (U.S. Geological Survey, emerita) — President Elect
  • Ms. Anna Shaughnessy (Earth Resources Laboratory, MIT, retired) — Secretary
  • Dr. Susan M. Sullivan (Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)) — Member at Large
  • Dr. Paul Weimer (University of Colorado, Boulder) — Member at Large

The new AGI President, Dr. Rod Ewing, is the Frank Stanton Professor in Nuclear Security and Co-Director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and a Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Stanford University. He has written extensively on issues related to nuclear waste and is a co-editor of Radioactive Waste Forms for the Future (1988) and Uncertainty Underground — Yucca Mountain and the Nation’s High-Level Nuclear Waste (2006). From 2012 to 2017, he was Chair of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Founding Editor of the magazine Elements, and a past president of the Mineralogical Society of America and the International Union of Materials Research Societies.

The new AGI President Elect, Dr. Carolyn G. Olson, previously served as Member at Large from 2016 to 2018. Dr. Paul Weimer will serve as Member at Large for one year, completing the remainder of Olson’s three-year term.
