AGI Welcomes AMS as its 52nd Member Society

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has joined the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) as the AGI Federation’s 52nd Member Society. The admission of AMS to the AGI Federation was formally approved by the AGI Member Society Council on October 23, 2017, at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Seattle.

“AMS brings significant professional and scientific credentials to the AGI Federation in the areas of atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic science,” said AGI Executive Director Allyson Anderson Book. “At AGI, we envision a world that understands and trusts the role of the geosciences in fostering creative solutions for the Earth and humanity, and partnering with AMS brings us closer to that vision, strengthening our Federation’s voice on topics that impact everyone, particularly weather hazards and climate change.”

With 12,600 members including scientists, educators, and broadcast meteorologists, the addition of AMS to the AGI Federation builds a more inclusive and interdisciplinary geoscience community.

“AMS shares the AGI vision for a world that is more aware of the role of the geosciences in their lives,” said AMS Executive Director Keith Seitter. “We are happy to have the 12,600 AMS members in the atmospheric and related sciences join the AGI Federation working collaboratively toward that goal.”
