Decision Points in the Geoscience Career Pathway Study Launched by AGI and YES Network

Alexandria, VA — The YES Network, with the support of the American Geological Institute (AGI), the Geological Society of London (GSL), and the Geological Society of America (GSA) is conducting a study to determine the key decision points in the career pathways for early-career geoscientists (from university through 10 years post-graduation).

This study aims to identify the factors contributing to individual career decisions and will monitor these career choices over a ten-year period. The study will provide direct insight into the factors influencing enrollment and retention in geoscience university programs as well as career pathway choices. For more information on the study, including information on how to participate in the survey, please visit http://www.networkyes.org/index.php/projects/decision_points_survey/.

Currently, this survey is being supported by AGI, GSL and GSA. AGI is providing web and database-hosting for the survey, while GSL and GSA are both providing survey prizes. If your organization would like to support this survey effort, please contact Joanne Venus (eejhv@leeds.ac.uk) or Leila Gonzales (img@agiweb.org).

The YES Network is an international association of early-career geoscientists who are primarily under the age of 35 years and are from universities, geoscience organizations and companies from across the world. The YES Network was formed as a result of the International Year of Planet Earth in 2007. In 2009, in collaboration with the TYPE and under the patronage of UNESCO, the YES Network organized its first international Congress at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing, China. The Congress focused on climate, environmental and geoscience challenges facing today’s society, as well as career and academic pathway challenges faced by early-career geoscientists. The YES Network aims to establish an interdisciplinary global network of individuals committed to solving these challenges, and furthering the TYPE motto of “Earth Sciences for Society.”
