'Energy Resources for Our Future' Theme Powers Earth Science Week 2025

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) announces that the theme of Earth Science Week 2025 will be “Energy Resources for Our Future.” The event, to be held October 12-18, 2025, will explore the many ways that geoscience can inform the vital decisions and actions that shape our global energy future.

Our energy future calls for navigating complex choices about how we power our homes, businesses, transportation, and communities. These decisions require a deep understanding of their environmental, social, and economic impacts, and how they align with our personal and societal values. Earth science provides crucial knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of current and emerging energy sources.

This year’s Earth Science Week theme, “Energy Resources for Our Future,” emphasizes ways that Earth science helps us all to be informed energy consumers. By understanding our energy options, we can actively work towards a sustainable future that ensures a high quality of life for all for generations to come.

“Innovations and discoveries emerging from the geoscience enterprise are vital to expand the portfolio of energy resource options to benefit society and the planet,” AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur said on making the announcement. “In these and other ways, the geosciences play a key role in maintaining sustainable energy supplies.”

Building awareness of the geosciences nationally and around the world, AGI leads Earth Science Week in cooperation with its sponsors and the geoscience community as a service to the public. Each October, community groups, educators, and interested citizens organize celebratory events. The 28th annual Earth Science Week will offer opportunities to discover the earth sciences as they relate to energy resources and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth.

Learn more about the event at https://www.earthsciweek.org. If your organization would like to become a sponsor or provide educational materials for the Earth Science Week 2025 Toolkit, please contact AGI’s director of education and outreach, Ed Robeck (ecrobeck@americangeosciences.org).

Earth Science Week is supported by many organizations, including the U.S. Geological Survey; American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation; NASA; National Park Service; ExxonMobil; Natural Resources Conservation Service; Geological Society of America; AmericaView; American Geophysical Union; Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (Minerals Education Coalition); American Meteorological Society; and others. Each year AGI welcomes additional partners that share AGI’s mission of building Earth science awareness. For example, in 2024 Seequent and Earth Observations for SDGs became new Earth Science Week partners. Please contact us if your organization would like to explore becoming a program partner.
