Explore the Art of Geoscience Education at the Torpedo Factory

Join hundreds of children and their families at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, for Art Safari. This year, scientists affiliated with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) will work alongside Torpedo Factory artists to help participants understand and appreciate the interplay of art and Earth system science.

Resident and visiting artists will work with geoscientists to lead young visitors in several hands-on creative projects across a variety of media, including clay, papier-mâché, printmaking, and feet painting. Children should wear clothing that can get dirty. All activities are free and most appropriate for children ages 5-11, with some activities requiring parental assistance.

Art Safari takes place on the eve of AGI’s Earth Science Week (October 14-20), an event reaching more than 50 million people worldwide. “Earth as Inspiration” is not only the theme of Earth Science Week 2018, which offers free education resources, information, and activities on earth science and art. “Earth as Inspiration” also is the name of the film series and public awareness campaign currently led by AGI Earth Science Education Ambassador Sally Jewell, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
