Geoscientists' Busy Summer and Fall Field Experiences in Exotic Locations | GeoSpectrum

Summer and fall were busy for the geoscience community! This issue covers some of the most amazing field experiences in exotic locations. Geoscientists were in:

  • Canadian Rockies with the Association for Women Geoscientists
  • Istanbul, Turkey with American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)
  • Greece with Society for Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Geoscientists Without Borders
  • Haiti with the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists (AEG)
  • Morocco with the International Association of Hydrologists

The American Geophysical Union talks about their “Postcards from the Field” program. AGU Members have been diligently submitting pictures for the AGU Tumblr showing just what fieldwork is like - the good, the bad and the gritty.

This issue of GeoSpectrum also highlights the discussions all AGI Member Organizations have been having regarding topics of diversity, inclusion, accessibility and equality in geoscience. The International Association for Geoscience Diversity hosted the first fully accessible geology field trip at the most recent Geological Society of America Meeting in Vancouver. The Geological Society of London has signed a declaration on the topic regarding their science council. The Association of American Geographers introduces the geoscience community to their newest staff member, Dr. Yonette Thomas. She will help oversee the organization’s growing research program portfolio but will also provide strong expertise and leadership to AAG’s multiple initiatives on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities and other diversity and equity programs. Lastly, AAG President, Mona Domosh, explores how to foster a healthier discipline.

As always, there are multiple news items on how AGI Member Organizations are working with the broader public, helping shape the workforce, creating innovative educational experiences, and bringing their scientists to Washington, D.C. to interact with their elected officials. Find out how students and student chapters within AGI organizations have won scholarships for research and outreach.
