AGI and Partners Announce Critical Minerals Forum: Advances in Critical Mineral Research

Alexandria, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to host a February 2021 online Critical Minerals Forum entitled “Advances in Critical Mineral Research: A Forum in Memory of Victor Labson.” The forum is sponsored by the World Community of Geological Surveys and organized by the Geological Survey of Canada, Geoscience Australia, and the U.S. Geological Survey. AGI Releases Framework for Addressing Racial and Ethnic Equity in Geosciences Professional Societies

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce the release of the Framework for Addressing Racial and Ethnic Equity in Geosciences Professional Societies. Crafted by a committee of representatives from AGI member societies, the document sets a framework for geoscience societies to proactively cultivate an inclusive profession that addresses systemic issues at its core and sets priorities aimed at increasing equity for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) geoscientists and addressing issues of intersectionality among race, class, disability status, and gender. The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) congratulates the winners and finalists of this year’s Earth Science Week art, photo, essay, and video contests. The creative submissions addressed the Earth Science Week 2020 theme of “Earth Materials in Our Lives.” Justin Xu of Sugar Hill, Georgia, won first place in the visual arts contest. AGI Invites Applications for New Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession

Alexandria, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce its new Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession. The scholarship is a one-time $5,000 award supporting geoscience graduate studies by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who self-identifies as a member of an underrepresented minority (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color) and is within two semesters of completing a recognized geoscience program. “The geosciences can thrive only with full participation from all communities, yet research shows that many underrepresented minority students face obstacles in the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies,” says AGI Interim Executive Director Sharon Tahirkheli. PMUG Becomes an AGI International Associate

Alexandria, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) welcomes the Japanese Society of Geo-Pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban Geology (PMUG) as an International Associate. PMUG’s admission to the AGI federation was formally approved by the AGI Board of Directors recently. PMUG, which is based in Japan, envisions a society based on sustainable development. PMUG publishes Geo-Pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban Geology and other publications; holds conferences and other academic meetings; encourages research activity and makes awards for achievements; promotes international research activities or academic exchanges; and carries out additional projects. James M. Robertson Honored with AGI's Ian Campbell Medal for Superlative Service to the Geosciences

Robertson, recently retired State Geologist and Director of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, as the 2020 recipient of the AGI Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell for Superlative Service to the Geosciences, AGI’s highest award.
