Sergio de Alba to Receive AGI's Roy Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Sergio de Alba, a sixth-grade teacher at R.M. Miano Elementary School in Los Banos, California, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. De Alba earned his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies as well as multiple certificates in Bilingual Cross-Cultural Language, Multiple Subject Teaching, and School Administration from California State University, Stanislaus. In his 18 years as a teacher, de Alba has received awards and recognitions such as the Los Banos Unified School District Teacher of the Year award, National Science Teacher Association Sylvia Shugrue Award for Elementary School Teachers, EPA Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators award honorable mention, and Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. AGI Publishes 2018 Status of the Geoscience Workforce Report Alexandria, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) announces the publication of Status of the Geoscience Workforce 2018, the comprehensive report on educational, employment, and economic indicators in the geosciences. This benchmark report integrates primary data collected by AGI along with data from federal agencies and geoscience societies to provide a view into the state of the geosciences. AGI Celebrates NGWA's Groundwater Awareness Week

To support National Groundwater Awareness Week (March 10-16), an initiative of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is sharing a wealth of groundwater science resources. AGI’s Critical Issues Program includes links to dozens of articles, factsheets, case studies, maps, and online courses that provide groundwater information in a way that is relevant and useful to state and local decision-makers. Emily Mixon Receives 2019 Harriet Evelyn Wallace Scholarship

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) congratulates Emily Mixon as one of two 2019 recipients of the Harriet Evelyn Wallace Scholarship. This highly competitive scholarship, which is awarded each year to two women pursuing graduate degrees in geoscience, provides a $5,000 award for one academic year. Mixon is a master’s student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Geosciences. She is a member of the WiscAr lab group, named for the argon dating technique which is used to understand geologic processes over tens of millions of years. [Read More]
