Said of a medium whose properties are the same in all directions; in crystal optics, said of a crystal whose physical properties do not vary according to crystallographic direction, e.g. one in which in which light travels with the same speed in any direction. Cubic crystals and amorphous substances are usually isotropic. Ant: anisotropic [cryst].
