pyrolusite (py-ro-lu'-site). A soft iron-black or dark steel-gray tetragonal mineral of the rutile group: Mn⁴⁺O₂ . It is the most important ore of manganese and is dimorphous with ramsdellite. Pyrolusite is generally massive or reniform, sometimes with a fibrous or radiate structure. Syn: polianite; gray manganese ore.
