Job Summary

This position is located in the Food and Drug Administration, National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), Office of Research, Division of Systems Biology, Jefferson, AR.

Major Duties

  • Plan and carry out scientific experiments and/or techniques and procedures in support of projects involving basic biological, biochemical and/or molecular biology techniques.
  • Provide innovative approaches to solve complex problems.
  • Test for the purity and integrity of the isolated RNA and proteins.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including coordinating research projects and personnel as well as ensuring the availability of equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in writing Abstracts and Materials and Methods sections of manuscripts; and participate in preparing posters for meetings.
  • Perform basic manipulations including the dosing of animals, obtaining blood and tissues from animals following euthanasia and isolation and purification of RNA, protein and DNA from biological tissues of laboratory animals.
  • Plan and carry out all routine methods and procedures and develops some standard operating procedures.

Qualifications

The position of Biologist falls under the 0401 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-11, you must meet Time-in-Grade (TIG) requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 12/18/2019. In addition to meeting TIG, applicants must also meet the Basic Requirement AND Minimum Qualifications as follows: BASIC REQUIREMENT: A. Have a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in Biological sciences, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS AT TIME OF APPLICATION). OR

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS AT TIME OF APPLICATION). In addition to meeting either of the Basic Requirements stated above, applicants must also meet either of the following: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the Federal service assisting scientific/research team(s) in planning and conducting biological, biochemical and/or molecular biological laboratory experiments; providing guidance to others on laboratory management and maintaining laboratory compliance with institutional safety and animal use regulations; conducting protein expression purification and characterization; and analyzing and communicating the results of experiments on cell-based assays.

B. Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines that provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work of this position; OR I have successfully completed three full years (54 semester hours or the equivalent) of progressively higher level doctoral education leading toward such a degree (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS AT TIME OF APPLICATION). In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Pay Range

$62,236.00 - $80,912.00
