Job Summary
This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville Human Nutrition Center, Food Component and Health Laboratory with one vacancy in Beltsville, Maryland.
Major Duties
- Assists in design of human feeding studies, assists in preparation and management of Institutional Review Board protocols, assists in recruitment/screening/selection of human study subjects.
- Prepares biological samples from human studies.
- Searches scientific literature for principles, methods, and procedures of chemical analysis of biological samples to meet study goals and selects the most appropriate for the research goals and fiscal resources.
- Evaluates data, performs appropriate calculations for data analysis, and performs statistical analyses.
- Utilizes complex equipment for these analyses, including any of the following methods: gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, quadrupole mass spectrometry, and ion trap mass spectrometry.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements: 0401 Series: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to the Basic Requirement listed above, you must meet the required specialized experience below: At the GS-11: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience executing human nutrition intervention studies; performing PCR on biological samples; performing qualitative and quantitative analysis on human biological samples or food crops; and maintaining and operating scientific equipment including a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree if directly related. Related degrees may include biological sciences. OR A combination of education and experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: The work requires physical ability and dexterity to execute micro techniques with precision and accuracy while wearing protective clothing and gloves. Work is often tedious requiring patience and persistence. The work requires prolonged periods of standing and sitting and some walking. Lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds to perform maintenance functions is routinely required. In addition, the work may require some effort after working hours and/or weekends when protocols necessitate extended periods. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a laboratory/office. Employee is expected to work with and be exposed to a wide variety of irritating chemicals, flammable liquids, carcinogenic materials, and noxious fumes. Employee is expected to work with blood, urine, feces, and other biological samples derived from human study subjects. Work requires special safety precautions and protective clothing and equipment. The work is performed in a manner designed to minimize exposure to harmful biological and chemical agents.
Pay Range
$69,581.00 - $90,461.00
