Job Summary

This position is located at the Mississippi Field Station of the National Wildlife Research Center. You will serve as a biologist within two Research Projects 1) "Defining economic impacts and developing strategies for reducing avian predation in aquaculture" and 2) "Defining economic impacts and developing control measures for feral swine".

Major Duties

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Contributes to the overall planning of studies by conducting literature reviews and making suggestions for improvement of research methods and techniques.
  • Prepares internal reports and regular activity reports and collaborates with research biologists in preparing publishable manuscripts based on findings of assigned portions of studies.
  • Organizes research data to facilitate statistical analyses.
  • Plan and obtain equipment and supplies necessary to conduct laboratory and field research.
  • Coordinate with study directors to ensure that logistical needs of studies are met.
  • Traps, transports, and cares for birds or feral swine needed for laboratory and field studies.
  • Communicate both in writing and verbally to private citizens, the APHIS/WS Program, other Federal agencies, private industry, coworkers, and the academic sector concerning research priorities.
  • Assists research biologists in conducting studies.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR;

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Performing necropsies, collecting and handling of biological samples and specimens of targeted wildlife. Aquaculture field experience utilizing wildlife damage management principles and technology which includes safely utilizing live traps on avian wildlife for the purpose of attaching satellite transmitters. Conducting research studies regarding wildlife and wildlife management. Recording data, writing reports and manuscripts, and conducting literature searches related to wildlife specific research projects. Experience conducting resource management duties for wildlife management field projects. Specifically, requesting and allocating project materials and performing project management duties to meet field project goals. OR; 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following degree fields: Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or Wildlife Management.. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level. TRANSCRIPTS are required if: This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified. You are qualifying for the position based on education. You are qualifying for this position based on a combination of experience and education. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-09 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$52,905.00 - $68,777.00
