Job Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Unit, located in Ames, Iowa. The incumbent works as part of an interdisciplinary team providing customer support to the operational requirements of research programs i.e., preparing, managing, and analyzing research data; developing and implementing visualization and query tools for Soy Base and the Legume Information System.

Major Duties

  • Prepare and load genetic and genomic data for visualization in genome browsers.
  • Document bioinformatics workflows for use by other researchers, using standard distributed documentation tools or platforms.
  • Develop new computational and statistical approaches to analyze and interpret research data.
  • Provide training and briefing sessions for project staff on computer and database applications.
  • Design bioinformatics pipelines with the following languages for genome informatics projects: Unix shell; Perl; Python; and R.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education AND In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At the GS-09: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience preparing and analyzing biological research data; assisting with developing databases to record scientific data; and developing and implementing data tools for an information technology system. OR Education: Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree if related. Related degrees may include statistics, bioinformatics, computer science, genetics, or computational biology, or similar fields. OR An appropriate combination of graduate education and experience as described above. At the GS-11: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience preparing and analyzing biological research data; developing databases to record scientific data related to crops or genetics; developing and implementing data tools for an information technology system; and presenting IT developments at scientific conferences. OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include statistics, bioinformatics, computer science, genetics, or computational biology, or similar fields. OR An appropriate combination of Ph.D level education and experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$52,905.00 - $83,210.00
