Job Summary
This position is located in the Mycotoxin Prevention & Applied Microbiology Research Unit, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in Peoria, IL. The incumbent is responsible for working in collaboration with laboratory scientist and other computation biologist to lead, design, conduct analyze, and interpret genomic, metagenomics, transcriptomic, metabolomics, and proteomic studies in order to develop novel solution to major agricultural problems.
Major Duties
- Designs and uses computer software, algorithms, and approaches to perform bioinformatics analyses for experimental procedures, techniques, and data formats.
- Provides training on the use of systems and programs and works with individual scientists so they can prepare pipelines in support of their research.
- Contributes research findings through publication of journal articles, proceedings publications, presentation at national and international meetings and stakeholder workshops.
- Plans, conducts, and reports research on the genetic and metabolic diversity of mycotoxigenic fungi and on the molecular interactions between these fungi and their plant hosts.

A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting bioinformatic and computational biology research in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and/or metabolomics; and using programming languages to manipulate research data. At the GS-13 Level:
Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience in designing and using computer software to plan and independently conduct bioinformatics analyses of genomic or related data for publication in scientific journals. At the GS-14 Level:
Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience leading teams in designing and developing computational programs to manipulate research data; designing and using computer software to perform bioinformatics analyses for experimental procedures; and preparing and presenting scientific documentation for publication and presentation. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$76,721.00 - $140,146.00
