Job Summary

Major Duties

As a Biologist within the Columbia Environmental Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Participating in the planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical, and physical processes that affect ecosystems
  • Conducting laboratory experiments and protocols to test scientific hypotheses;
  • Planning the approach and collecting data needed to carry out less complex studies or portions of larger biological science investigations;
  • Performing data analysis and writing reports to evaluate findings
  • Recommending minor modifications to program objectives and associated documentation in accordance with established program directives.
  • Gathering, organizing, and interpreting a wide variety of biological, ecological, pathological, or public use data, or other information pertinent to scientific studies or investigations.
  • Developing and maintaining computer databases on biological information
  • Gathering, analyzing, tabulating and summarizing scientific, programmatic, and/or budgetary data.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

In

addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:Examples of GS-07 level work may include:

Experience conducting a range of laboratory tests, including but not limited to water quality, hormone tests, and immunohistochemistry; experience managing operations in a histology laboratory including sample collection, processing, microscopy, and analysis; experience training less experienced personnel; experience conducting and training others to culture fish and run fish chemical exposure studies; experience performing fish necropsies and tissue sample collections; experience independently developing new procedures and techniques for use by others; experience performing data management, tracking, and analysis to produce graphs, tables, and statistical analysis of data for publication; experience with documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical software such as JMP or R.

Pay Range

$51,440.00 - $66,868.00
