Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for Scientific, Technical, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) is being used to fill this position. Salary: $78,081 (Step 01) to $101,503 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Major Duties

As a Biologist within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Performs sub-tidal fieldwork at San Nicolas Island and captures sea otters using SCUBA and underwater dive techniques.
  • Handles the threatened California sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis). This position will require the ability to obtain a USFWS permit that authorizes surveying, capturing, and handling of the California sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis).
  • Works with or provides assistance to other federal, state, and public and private organizations, including presentations at professional meetings, answering questions, providing orientation talks, and developing responses to routine biological correspondence.
  • Represents the USGS Southwest Region on the National Dive Safety Board, and oversees all USGS diving activities occurring in the Southwest Region including Hawaiian Islands and Pacific US Trust Territories.
  • Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications

BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.(CLICKHEREFOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have three full years of progressively higher level graduate level education **OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. **OR One year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include: 1) participation in the planning and execution of biological studies with limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; 3) conducting biological studies using established fact finding procedures. 4)capturing, handling and marking methods applicable to species of coastal vertebrates and invertebrates, particularly sea otters and their prey items. 5) use of radio-telemetry and remote sensing techniques and the ability to conduct radio-telemetry and surveys from boats and small, single engine aircraft, over water.

For examples 1-5, assignments were made with the objectives, priorities, and deadlines defined. The work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven techniques, methods, and practices. Controversial use of approaches or modifications of standard procedures were typically discussed with a designated person before being carried out. Selective Factor

To be basically qualified for this position, applicants must meet the OPM qualification standard (above) and the following selective factor(s): Applicant must be certified by the U.S. Geological Survey, American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), or equivalentto divewith SCUBA. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Pay Range

$78,081.00 - $101,503.00
