Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for Biologistis being used to fill this position.. Salary: $84,244 (Step 01) to $109,522 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01.

Major Duties

As a Biologist, with the Great Lakes Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Plans and conducts studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical and physical processes that affect ecology, fishery and/or wildlife resources. Deploys data-collection systems and manipulates and analyzes data from these systems. Analyzes and resolves extremely complex technical problems for which current information is inconclusive or is in the form of suppositions or theories regarding the effectiveness of certain treatments. Writes comprehensive reports on study finds and recommendations.
  • Carries out investigations of ecological, fishery and/or wildlife conservation, preservation, and propagation issues. Establishes new and modified methods, techniques and procedures to resolve obscure and novel technical problems.
  • Conducts project analyses and reviews results of studies or investigation. Evaluates the impact of the latest technological advances in ecology, fishery and/or wildlife resource management on novel studies conducted and on current and future programs.
  • Communicates science directives and policies with regard to Great Lakes fisheries and regional natural resource priorities with various audiences.

Physical Demands:

The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching reaching or similar actives. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

In

addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:

Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
