What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for Biologist, GS-0401 is being used to fill this position. Salary: $64,009 (Step 01) to $83,210 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.
Major Duties
As a Biologist within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Study interactions between wildlife populations, habitat attributes, anthropogenic change, and management actions; primarily in sagebrush ecosystems.
-Model and interpret datasets of wildlife-habitat relationships, survival and recruitment, spatial use, and predator-prey relationships, using advanced statistical techniques (such as Maximum-Likelihood, Bayesian, Geostastical, and/or Geoprocessing analyses). Perform analyses using software such as R, WinBugs, JAGS, ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, R raster packages.
-Under lead of Principal Investigator, prepare and publish scientific reports, manuscripts and literature regarding fields of wildlife biology and ecology. hypotheses analyses, results, and implications into peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.
-Provide project management support for the principal investigator. Lead staff and co-workers to work effectively under pressure with fluctuating deadlines, shifting flexibility from one activity or project to another while successfully managing time and resources to complete an assigned task or meet an objective.
-Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
-The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet-rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching reaching, or similar activities.

Examples include:
One year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include: 1) participation in the planning and execution of biological studies with limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; 3) conducting biological studies using established fact finding procedures. For examples 1-3, assignments were made with the objectives, priorities, and deadlines defined. The work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven techniques, methods, and practices. Controversial use of approaches or modifications of standard procedures were typically discussed with a designated person before being carried out.You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
