Job Summary

Position is located at the Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Lakewood, Colorado. Incumbent plans and executes professional cartographic activities. Designs, evaluates and constructs maps, charts, and digital Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in support of land management objectives. Major Duties

  • Create new cartographic products, cartographic styles/elements, and transform existing maps to new formats or revise existing maps using various Geographic Information System (GIS) software such as Creative Suite/Adobe Illustrator and ArcGIS.
  • Design, evaluate and construct maps, charts and digital Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using professional knowledge of cartography and photogrammetry to meet organization land management objectives.
  • Serve as Geographic Information System (GIS) specialist for unit?s recreation and boundary management cartographic production and publication.
  • Resolve cartographic problems with management staff to assure satisfactory end products for organizational use.
  • Determine compliance with cartographic standards for professional services contracts.
  • Make significant cartographic departures from previous approaches to similar projects to accommodate specialized project requirements.
  • Manage mapping files for publication/large format printing including defining print contract technical specifications.
  • Prepare digital packages, review pre-press proofs, make on-site press inspections, and resolve complex lithographic problems at press time.
  • Prepare and finalize paperwork required to contract lithographic production.
  • Plan and execute cartographic efforts within a quality assurance program relevant to land management programs.

GS-1370: Degree: Cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-12: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Analyzed project needs with the understanding of specific needs of multiple scientific disciplines such as surveying, geology, geography, remote sensing, and computer science to design customized Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing products; Adapted base series components and other available hard copy or digital sources to meet program specifications and requirements; Prepared complex special-purpose and general-use maps and other spatial data representation products; Sourced data used to prepare maps and related products such as aerial photography, Global Positioning System (GPS) data files, and specialized environmental, engineering, and cultural resource databases; Built original digital map bases from inadequate source data, including both mapping and photography that is out of date, of varying scales, and inadequately controlled; Served as overall coordinator/integrator for cartography on a unit with responsibility for planning and executing complex studies of considerable scope with elements or components from related disciplines, such as geology, geodesy, GIS, urban planning, and anthropology. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Pay Range

$84,118.00 - $109,358.00
