Job Summary

You will serve as Cartographer performing work directly related to the acquisition, management, and disposal of various real property land interests of the United States. This is a developmental, career ladder GS- 1370 position. This position may be filled at either the GS-11 or GS-12 level. Duties and responsibilities at the full performance GS-12 level will include:

Major Duties

  • Work is directly related to the acquisition, management, and disposal of various real property land interests of the United States.
  • Follow accepted real estate and cartographic practices.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute cartographic activities for the Seattle District, other U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Districts, Army, Department of Defense, and Civilian Agencies.
  • Provide a professional knowledge base of cartography and real estate.
  • Utilize an extensive knowledge of processes, practices, methods, and techniques involved in construction and revision of maps, charts, and related cartographic products, incumbent selects and compiles data from a variety of sources.
  • Develop maps using digital cartographic techniques and equipment and may be incorporated into GIS (geographic information systems).
  • Prepare legal descriptions to accompany maps as required.
  • Prepare budgets and plans for cartographic services.

Qualifications

US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Cartographer: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in cartography, or a degree with a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience which includes providing cartography services as an expert or advisor including survey, geodesy, project management, hydrology, geography, remote sensing, aerial photo interpretation, and computer science to research, modify and develop mapping products, systems, and technology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Specialized Experience for the GS-11 level: One year of specialized experience which includes providing technical guidance and instructional cartography services including survey, geodesy, project management, hydrology, geography, remote sensing, aerial photo interpretation, and computer science to research, modify and develop mapping products, systems, and technology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics or other applicable field(s) of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
