Major Duties
Cartographic Technician works under the general supervision of a professional Cartographer, senior technician or designated resource specialist conducting a full range of assignments from basic to moderately complex including, but not limited to, the following:
GS-6: Performing limited drafting and mapping work to produce a variety of cartographic products which includes preparing or modifying digital maps. Digitizing, scanning, creating, compiling and/or drafting maps, diagrams, and data according to basic cartographic principles. Performing quality control to reduce digitizing errors and correct compilation or publication errors present in the source material. Creating backups of digitized data and assisting the digitizing unit cartographer in providing technical support and training to other members of the digitizing staff. Assisting and instructing less experienced technicians. Providing assistance to other staff members in creating, editing, and correcting digital data or map information.
GS-7: Preparing conventional maps, graphs, and illustrations using traditional cartographic methods or automated systems; performing automated and/or manual digitizing to convert data into Geographic Information System (GIS) databases; producing plotted maps using automated systems and software such as ARC/INFO and ARCVIEW. Entering data obtained from a variety of sources in digital format; editing, verifying, and formatting data in digital form; processing cartographic data and graphic products for entry into a digital database by editing and reviewing data for accuracy and consistency. Orienting and outlining map features and details from photographic materials, generally from aerial photographs, requiring selection and identification of control points, computing angles, preparing template lay downs, assembling prints for mosaics, operating stereographic equipment and using standard photogrammetric techniques. Final products include road and trail rights-of-way center line information (such as angles and distances obtained by the incumbent directly from the aerial photography).
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Work performed in an office or similar setting requires regular and recurring periods of prolonged sitting at drafting light tables, digitizing tablets, and computer workstations. Some lifting, bending, and carrying are required to move and service equipment, to handle source materials and supplies, and arrange office space. This job may require field work where there may be exposure to rain, heat, and cold in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day. In this environment, prescribed safety precautions should be taken.
Qualifications
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. GS-6:One (1)year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5 level. Examples ofspecialized experiencemay include experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy; limited drafting and mapping work; gather and prepare digital data sets to digitize and enter into files; correcting digital data or map information.-OR- Successful completion of one (1) full academic yearof graduate education directly related to the occupation. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-7: One(1) year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-6 level. Examples ofspecialized experiencemay include experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy; performs spatial data entry, editing and organization within a multi-user enterprise geo database; creates, acquires, defines and manages geospatial and tabular data. -OR- Successful completion ofone (1)full academic yearof graduate education related to the occupation.
Related Course Work:Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.Not more than nine (9) of the eighteen (18) semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower gradeof the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may includepreparing/constructing new or revised maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, map overlays, and special presentation materials that involve computing, translating, and transferring specific physical data and pertinent information into graphic form. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Pay Range
$18.13 - $20.15
