Job Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Eastern Regional Research Center, Molecular Characterization of Foodborne Pathogens with one vacancy in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.

Major Duties

  • Use of computational applications for the interpretation and annotation of nucleic acid sequence data.
  • Use of computational approaches for interpretation of genetic, physiological, metagenomic, and functional genomic and proteomic data.
  • Analyze and integrates genomic and proteomic data to make predictions about the behavior of pathogens in response to environmental conditions and other perturbations.
  • Use fundamental principles of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, computer science/engineering, microbiology, genomics, and proteomics.
  • Conduct trainings and/or makes presentations at conferences, workshops, and meetings.
  • Provide guidance and advice on computational biology methods, techniques, and results to other scientists in the Management Unit.
  • Use computer science and computer operating systems, such as UNIX/LINUS, sufficient to implement retrieval and analysis programs for complex datasets and of programming language (e.g. Python, Perl, Java, C/C+F).
  • Use computers to perform DNA, RNA, and protein sequence analysis and in datamining and analysis using internal resources, public databases, and publications.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: To qualify for the 0401 Series: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in investigations in computational biology or bioinformatics; analyzing research data related to biology or bioinformatics; and providing guidance or advice on computational biology methods. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$80,806.00 - $105,052.00
