Major Duties
Serves as a member of the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) Leadership Team and as the primary assistant to the Assistant Director in providing leadership and direction to the GEO Directorate, which supports research in the following major program areas: atmospheric and geospace sciences, earth sciences, ocean sciences and the polar environment. The Deputy Assistant Director’s focus is on management of the internal affairs of the Directorate, the integration and coordination of Directorate-wide initiatives, and providing leadership in the area of human capital management; including performance planning and evaluation, conflict management, recruitment, and professional development of directorate staff. Participates fully in all phases of planning, implementation, representational and policy-related activities involving the Directorate. In addition, assists with interagency coordination of the Directorate’s research activities and facilities.

1. Education, strongly preferred at the Ph.D. level, or equivalent professional experience, or a combination of education and equivalent experience in geosciences or a closely related discipline and demonstrated knowledge of relevant academic community and recognized professional standing in the geosciences community as evidenced by publications and/or professional leadership and awards.
2. Knowledge of current research capabilities, policy issues related to the needs of the academic and industrial research communities (including human resources, equipment, and facilities) and experience in scientific research support (including grant and contract administration and fiscal management).
3. Demonstrated ability to liaise with high-level officials of the federal government, scientific/engineering academic communities, and with officials of major scientific professional organizations.
4. Demonstrated ability to identify, interpret and clarify the intent and impact of Administration and Congressional initiatives and mandates, and to recommend appropriate procedures for implementation.

Pay Range
$172,508.00 - $193,800.00
