Major Duties

The basic duties below are described at the full performance level GS-11. At less-than-full-performance level, the incumbent will be assigned various tasks on an on-the-job training basis, with the difficulty of the tasks and degree of independent performance increasing gradually, as the incumbent becomes better trained, and demonstrates the ability to assume greater responsibility. At the full performance level, the Environmental Protection Specialist provides technical advice and assistance to managers, Conducts studies and surveys to identify problems, recommends modifications to operations, and develops environmental documentation in relation to assigned projects and sites. Other duties include assuring the conduct of on-site surveillance of environmental hazardous waste disposal processes; ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, etc..; evaluating surface protection and management program goals and objectives; and providing project support documentation and preliminary studies which lead to the approval or disapproval of projects that may have a surface disturbing impact. The specialist also develops and recommends and implements plans to accomplish program surface protection goals and modifies policies and procedures to comply with changes to applicable laws and regulations.

Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled:

Specialized experience for the GS-07: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in Environmental Protection Specialist work. At this level, work assignments are diverse, limited in complexity & selected to provide experience & training. Examples of specialized experience include the application of environmental and surface protection requirements such as inspection of surface disturbing activities to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policy, permits and conditions of approval; OR have 1 year of graduate education leading to a master`s degree in a directly related field. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work; OR meet the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) See OPM Quals Standard-General Policies E(4)(f); OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.Specialized experience for the GS-09: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in Environmental Protection Specialist work. At this level, recurring assignments that are independently performed are more difficult & complex than those performed at the lower grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: exercising judgment and a broad perspective in applying a thorough knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices relating to environmental protection programs; OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master`s degree or master`s or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field of study. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.Specialized experience for the GS-11: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in Environmental Protection Specialist work. Examples of specialized experience includes: work involving use of policies, organizational processes, operations, work practices, and environmental parameters of regulated industries and Federal agencies, States, or other entities sufficient to obtain information, evaluate compliance, and recommend necessary changes to control measures and best management practices; OR have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement.

Pay Range

$50,356.00 - $96,881.00
