Major Duties

As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you may:

Serves as the Division Chief and expert principal advisor to the Assistant Director, Program Support Directorate, implementing technical environmental policies and regulations regarding the application of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA).

Provides analytical expertise in a variety of technical environmental disciplines to support OSMRE's environmental rulemaking activities, legislative reviews, and development of environmental regulatory and reclamation policy and guidance.

Coordinate special initiatives designed to address technical environmental regulatory and reclamation issues, such as acid mine drainage, dam safety, and hydrologic balance.

Represents OSMRE at technical environmental meetings, seminars, and conferences to enhance professional capabilities and maintains state-of-the-art knowledge for environmental protection.

Coordinator with other agencies to address a variety of technical environmental research issues and studies needs for OSMRE.

Provide leadership for monitoring, collecting, and evaluating technical environmental information relating to coal mining and reclamation activities.

Provide programmatic direction to assigned staff members.

Qualifications

Applicant must possess one year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position that are typically in or directly related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at the GS-14 level or equivalent in the Federal service, or comparable pay band system. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Specialized Experience is defined as: Mastery of environmental protection program, principles, concepts, practices, methods, and techniques in order to resolve national level problems related to Federal and State regulatory processes and programs activities as well as national environmental regulations, environmental regulatory enforcement/compliance process, regulatory analysis and analytical expertise for a variety of environmental policy and technical/scientific disciplines to direct the activities of employees engaged in work associated with the natural and physical sciences in order to understand the breadth of technical problems associated with the environmental protection programs to provide alternatives, recommendations, or direction in the solution of problems. Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade requirements contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart 5. Applicants must meet all the qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies." Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Pay Range

$142,701.00 - $170,800.00
