Job Summary

A successful candidate in this position will serve as a nuclear safety specialistsupportingNNSA Production Office (NPO) managers on Nuclear Explosive Safety and Safety Basis withresponsibility for reviewing work in support of nuclear facility operations. More than one position may be filled from this vacancy announcement.

Major Duties

As a General Engineer/ Physical Scientist, you will:

  • be responsible for technical review of the following processes: Nuclear Explosive Safety Studies (NESS), Master Safety Studies (MSS), Safety Design Strategies (SDS), Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis, Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), and Technical Safety Requirements (TSR), Unreviewed Safety Question Process, and Nuclear Explosive Safety Evaluation Process.
  • be responsible for developing the technical justification supporting approval of Contractor developed Nuclear Safety Documentation via Safety Validation Reports and Safety Evaluation Reports.
  • Provide contractor oversight of the development and implementation of NESS, MSS, DSA, and associated TSR documents to ensure that the Nuclear Safety for all nuclear and nuclear explosive operations are established and maintained.
  • Participate on Safety Basis Review Teams, prepares review plans, and formally reviews contractor transmitted DSAs/TSRs, other Safety Basis Changes including required annual updates to the Plant DSA.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service (NN-02 pay band level or the GS-11 level).

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience applying nuclear safety engineering base program principles, practices, requirements and objectives sufficient to administer nuclear engineering safety rules, regulations and standards. Examples of specialized experience can include: Experience participating in planning, coordination and review activities that support the implementation of the Nuclear Safety Management Rule.

Experience performing a wide range of technical review tasks associated with the preliminary hazard analysis process, the un-reviewed safety questions, safety analysis and technical safety requirements process.

Knowledge of facilities, processes, procedures, structures, systems, and components associated with the nuclear weapons complex to detect and evaluate potential risk to life and property, and identify potential weaknesses and develop corrective actions that will provide optimal cost/benefit results. Knowledge of organizational policies and orders, and national codes, directives, relevant industry codes and standards, applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, and/or nuclear industry regulatory processes, sufficient to evaluate, interpret, and disseminate their applications to NNSA operations and facilities. Ability to contributewith technical expertise necessary in the nuclear safety program areas includingsafety basis review and safety evaluation efforts associated with nuclear and nuclear explosive facilities. Skill in developing technical summaries and communicating in writing in order to present issues and recommend solutions to senior technical staff, Field Office and contractor staff and management in areas of nuclear safety. Pay Range

$76,721.00 - $118,603.00
