Job Summary

This position is with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, Real Estate Division. The employee will apply extensive knowledge and experience with geographic, cartographic, and land surveying practices and methodology for the creation and analysis of GIS databases. The work involves a wide variety of complex techniques for on-going programs and many one-of-a-kind special projects that require state-of-the-art computer equipment and technology.

Major Duties

  • Gather, map and interpret Geographical and Geospatial data.
  • Knowledge and experience with geographic, cartographic, and land surveying practices and methodology to create and analyze Geographical Information System (GIS) databases.
  • Develop geo-referenced digital databases to analyze, interpret and correlate broad dataset with complex variables.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement digital data and mapping (raster and vector) in the area of remote sensing, photogrammetry, GIS, topography and land surveying utilizing up-to-date methodology, practices and equipment.
  • Perform complex and detailed trigonometric calculations, either manually or by coding data into computer programs.
  • Apply principles of real estate and cartography to outline specific features (i.e. property boundaries, buildings, land ties, utilities, contours, fence lines, power lines, takes, rivers and coastline features, etc.)
  • Develop real estate maps and data products from deeds, legal descriptions, and survey data or court documents and compares them with project boundaries to ensure accuracy.
  • Represent the Real Estate Division on project involving GIS, Mapping and CADD projects, and geospatial planning boards.
  • Maintain state-of-the art knowledge of technical advances and software applications and trains in-house users of GIS applications and products.

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience (GS-12): One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Analyzing Geographic Information System (GIS) data and/or geospatial data; 2) Producing maps from various physical documents and/or datasets; and 3) Operating various mapping programs and/or applications.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Pay Range

$88,651.00 - $115,251.00
