Major Duties
As a Geographer/Cartographer within the National Geospatial Program, some of your specific duties will include:
- Provides leadership for all aspects of digital cartographic content of The National Map, including technical guidance, cartographic design, data content, quality assessment and control, integration, dissemination and future products designed for mobile applications.
- Coordinates closely with leadership within USGS on strategic planning and policy guidance for The National Map.
- Serves as an expert advisor to other Federal, State, local governmental agencies, and to non-governmental organizations.
- Promotes and maintains public awareness of The National Map by reporting status and significant developments through appropriate Federal channels in scientific journals and at technical and scientific meetings and conferences.

The Headquarters for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is located in Reston, VA; however, this position may be located there or at any other established USGS duty location within the contiguous United States (i.e., excludes Alaska and Hawaii). The final duty location of this position will be agreed upon through negotiations between the hiring manager and the individual selected. The salary of the position will be based on the locality pay area of the final agreed upon duty location. This position will be expected to travel periodically to other USGS science centers and field sites for meetings or other business needs.

Qualifications

Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in geographic or cartographic work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in geography or cartography. At this level, geography or cartographers typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect geographic or cartographic programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
Pay Range
$107,807.00 - $140,146.00
