Job Summary

This position is located in USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, South East Region, Raleigh, North Carolina. The Geologist is responsible for providing the full range of geological services to assigned geographic area as assigned by the Geological Services Unit.

Major Duties

  • Responsible for conducting geologic analysis.
  • Applies geologic evaluation in geologic for a variety of practices.
  • Prepares geologic analysis services for land use categories.
  • Conduct, plan and modifies geologic investigations.
  • Conduct sedimentation studies.
  • Prepares written reports.

Qualifications

All applicants must meet all qualification (i.e. Basic Education Requirement, Specialized Experience Requirement) and eligibility (e.g. time-in-grade, general restriction on movement after competitive appointment/time-after-competitive appointment) by the closing date of this vacancy announcement. Basic Eligibility Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. or Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND For the GS-11 grade level:

You must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through federal service. Specialized experience includes: Assisting in preparing basic geologic analysis services; Assisting in basic application of geologic evaluation; Providing assistance with sedimentation studies; Conducting geologic investigations; Assisting in basic plans and modifying investigations based on knowledge of geologic field.

OR

Possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

Possess a combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy. For the GS-12 grade level:

You must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service that has equipped you with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes: Preparing basic geologic analysis services; Performing basic application of geologic evaluation; Conducting sedimentation studies; Conducting geologic investigations; Preparing basic plans and modifying investigations based on knowledge of geologic field. Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. Note: There is no education substitution for the GS-12 level. Pay Range

$66,515.00 - $103,647.00
