What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $93,587 (Step 01) to $121,668 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.
Major Duties
As a Geologist within the Pacific Coastal & Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Knowledge of scientific theories, principles, and practices of geophysics, marine geology, geomorphology, and sediment transport and appropriate related sciences such as chemistry, physics and engineering sufficient to collect, compile and interpret data for the evaluation of structural and stratigraphic problems.
-Knowledge of seismic data processing and analysis methods sufficient to acquire and assess data at sea, assure reliable and accurate operation of those acquisition systems, and process the data.
-Knowledge of sediment sample logging and dating techniques.
-Ability to use geographic information systems to analyze and represent data in meaningful ways, specifically ArcGIS.
-Knowledge of seismic data analysis methods sufficient to assess data acquired at sea and assure reliable and accurate operation of those acquisition systems.
-Ability to clearly and accurately write documents explaining field and laboratory data collection techniques, data analysis and interpretations, and ability to clearly and accurately explain project goals, activities, and results at public meetings and for media events.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Field work requires moderate to strenuous activities such as hiking, swimming, lifting, carrying, driving vehicles occasionally with trailers, and operating personal watercraft devises in potentially hazardous areas. Field work may also occur from airplanes, which may be subject to extreme weather, high noise levels, and excessive motion.

Examples include: planning and executing complex geologic studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods & techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Geologists have a very good knowledge of the principles of geology and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
