Job Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Midwest Area with one vacancy in Columbus, Ohio.

Major Duties

  • Participates as a team member with the scientist in all phases of the assignment(s) and assumes full technical and operational responsibility for specific phases assigned in relation to hydrology/ water quality/ conservation assessment.
  • Contributes to the planning of various steps in experiment or project, and interpretation and documentation of findings.
  • Constructs, assembles, installs, operates and maintains a variety of highly specialized scientific field and laboratory equipment/instruments which must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve desired results.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. At the GS-08: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with collecting hydrologic field measurements (i.e. stage, level, discharge); utilizing weirs, flumes, or velocity sensors to collect hydrology data; operating automated hydrology or water quality sampling equipment such as automated samplers; and assisting with analyzing hydrology or water quality samples using specialized software (i.e. FLOWLINK or AQUARIUS). OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include environmental science, water resources or agricultural engineering. OR A combination of graduate education and experience as described above. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting hydrologic field measurements (i.e. stage, level, discharge); installing and utilizing weirs, flumes, or velocity sensors to collect hydrology data; programming or operating automated hydrology or water quality sampling equipment such as automated samplers; and analyzing or correcting hydrology or water quality data using specialized software (i.e. FLOWLINK or AQUARIUS). OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include environmental science, water resources or agricultural engineering. OR A combination of graduate education and experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Working Environment:

The work is performed in a laboratory, shop, field, and/ or other research setting which involve regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions, e.g., working with electronic equipment or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as boots, goggles, and gloves.

Pay Range

$49,580.00 - $71,191.00
